Know Who You Are in Christ: A Biblical Identity Guide
In a world obsessed with labels, performance, and self-definition, it is easy to lose yourself in the noise. Culture tells you to “discover who you are” by looking inward—but Scripture invites you to find who you are by looking upward. The truest thing about you is not what others think or what you feel. The truest thing about you is what God says. And, cultivating this worldview in our children is fundamental for their Christian walk!
The first place I turn my children to when we are working through identity is the book of Ephesians.
Identity in Christ from Ephesians
The book of Ephesians is like a treasure chest on identity. In just the first chapter, Paul pours out truth after truth about who believers are in Christ:
- You are chosen before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4).
- You are holy and blameless in His sight (Eph. 1:4).
- You are adopted into God’s family (Eph. 1:5).
- You are redeemed through His blood (Eph. 1:7).
- You are forgiven according to the riches of His grace (Eph. 1:7).
- You are a recipient of His lavished grace (Eph. 1:8).
- You are sealed with the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13).
- You are His glory inheritance (Eph. 1:18).
- You are made alive with Christ (Eph. 2:5).
- You are God’s workmanship—His masterpiece (Eph. 2:10).
- You are a fellow citizen with the saints and members of God’s household (Eph. 2:19).
Paul doesn’t tell you to achieve your identity. Your identity and your child’s identity is not a project or something that can be found in counseling sessions—it’s a gift from God.
Once your life is rooted in who God says you are, everything else flows from that. Security. Purpose. Peace. Endurance. Confidence. Joy. Freedom.

Living From Identity, Not For Identity
When you live for your identity, you run yourself ragged trying to prove your worth.
When you live from your identity in Christ, you walk in freedom!
God’s Word doesn’t tell you to “find yourself.”
It tells you to root yourself—in Him.
Identity is not a discovery; it’s a revelation.
Not self-created; God-declared.
Not fragile; secured by the cross and sealed by the Spirit.
A Closing Encouragement
I encourage you to take these Scriptures and speak them over your life. Pray them daily (I am trying so hard to make praying Scripture part of my daily habits!). Journal on them: what they mean to you, what you struggle accepting, and how you can surrender more of your identity to Jesus. Memorize as many of them as you can–when God’s Word is hidden in your heart, the lies of the world become so much less appealing!
And remember, the God who created you also defines you—and His word over your life is final.
